Volvo Flywheel KERS Hybrid cuts fuel consumption by 25%

Two years ago we reported that Volvo were testing a clever hybrid Flywheel KERS system for road cars and hoped it would prove to be a good way to make road cars more economical. And it seems it does. The Hybrid Flywheel KERS system Volvo has developed weighs only 6kg, has a diameter of just 20cm, is made of carbon fibre, sits in a vacuum and is located on the back axle and works by recovering energy under braking which is then stored for use when the car moves off.

The lesser of the two new offerings, the new SLS GT, will cost from £165,030 and gets an extra 20bhp over the standard SLS, taking its output to 591.bhp, with power driven to the rear wheels through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed ‘box, with 0-62mph taking 3.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 199mph. If it matters, official economy is 21.4mpg and emissions 308g/km. Volvo Chief Designer reinterprets classic P1800

Christopher Benjamin, Chief Designer at Volvo's Monitoring and Concept Center in the US, has penned his vision of a future P1800 as part of Volvo's half-centenary celebrations for the car. Unveiled during the #SwedeSpeak Twitter chat, Benjamin presented this future vision of the iconic sports car. Volvo states that Benjamin is a true admirer of the original P1800 and that these images are what he feels a modern-day interpretation could look like.
