Up for auction is a pair of factory New Old Stock frame rails. Factory N.O.S. Frame rails are simply the rarest part for an Avanti on the planet. They were not sold by Studebaker as a rail only. They only sold complete frames. Avanti motors assigned a part number to the left, 1701371, and to the right frame rail, 1701370, but never published these part numbers and or description in their parts book they sold. However, their part numbers of 1701370 frame side member right and 1701371 frame side member left were published in their “Inventory Master file” for 1985 at a net cost of 399.00 each, meaning No discount. They gave me a copy of that for my use which I still have. They also sold complete frame assemblies. We were a factory authorized new and used auto dealership for Avantis exclusively with a fully stocked parts and service department/body shop. That being said, Avanti motors Probably sold us parts that they probably didn’t sell to anybody else, that’s why they are so very rare. WE stocked complete frames and frame rails. I don’t believe anybody else in the world purchased frame rails from the factory.

They are not in any way repops or reproductions. They are truly NOS. They will most likely never be stamped again. Avanti, when owned by the Carfaro family, sold the original tool for scrap and it was cut into moveable pieces out behind their plant in about 1990-1991. I believe the tooling weighted between 80,000– 100,000 pounds. It was enormous. The cost to retool would be outrageous, the rails can be installed as a complete rail on each side, or they can be sectioned as to only replace the back half on each side. The Avantis from 1963-1985 have always had a rust through problem on the frames. There is no good way to repair the rust out problem without new frame rails. Still some have claimed they have had the rear section of the frame rails remanufactured (repoped), or they will make the pieces needed for the repair. The repoppers sections of frame rails I have seen being sold and/or installed were only a section of rail, a couple of feet long. Which was the most rear straight sections of the rail, then there are the people that just cut pieces of steel and attempt to weld them on the inside and/or outside. They may also cut out a small rusted out section and bend up a piece of steel and flush weld them in place of the removed area, camouflage the repair area with under coating and or/ plastic filler, paint and etc, and claim it is as good as new.

The problem with the previously mentioned repairs is that the rusted through sections that were replaced with other than factory stamp rails may have not solved the entire problem. The other areas that are the thinnest, weakest and most dangerous is the ones you just can’t see. The frame sections behind, in between, under or below the rear spring front pivot point. The original Studebkaer Avanti parts book part numbers are 1556166 right and 1556167, left. Rear spring hangers and body mounts. This is where the front of the rear spring is bolted to the frame through the spring bushing. If you look at these sections of frame rail, you will notice that the hanger assembly is riveted to the bottom of the frame rail assembly, then welded to the top of the rails. Please also notice that the lower boxing plates were previous welded on the rails and are now in between the rails lower flange and the lower hanger plate. This is a sandwich of bare steel to bare steel. The X member is welded to the inside

General Motors said Thursday that it is partnering with its battery cell supplier, LG Group, to develop electric vehicles. The agreement, signed Wednesday by GM CEO Dan Akerson and LG President Juno Cho, will “help GM expand the number and types of electric vehicles it makes and sells,” the automaker said in a statement.
