“Quickest 6-barrel this side of Laramie.”

You’re looking down the throats of Ford’s brand-new six-barrel 406 cubic inch V-8, & when you pull the trigger 405 horse power will come blasting out the other end like a stampede through the pass.

This is the heaviest ammunition a Galaxie carries – 6300 top r.p.m., 448 pounds feet of torque, 11.40:1 compression ratio, header exhausts, low restriction paper air cleaner, H.D. bearings… in short, the polished 1962 version of the engine has made more successful quarter-mile take-offs than Point Magu. Available only with Ford’s three speed, or (note this) four-speed manual shift, it is an extra cost option that comes only as a package you can’t get it without heavy duty springs, shocks, nylon tires and other tasties that make it stick as well as it storms. The price is really friendly and, for a car that makes 1,320 feet seem like a city block… But that’s the Ford genius, why not take advantage of it? Buy FORD!

“TRIPLE THREAT”

During the early 60’s Ford has a serious fascination with triple carburation to enhance performance. Well known are the 390/401 and 406/405 Tri-power options for the full size Fords of the era. Less familiar, but not less interesting, is the six-barrel option available in the Thunderbird for portions of the ’62 and ’63 model years.

Well known are the 390/401 and 406/405 Tri-power options for the full size Fords of the era. Producing and advertised 340hp, the hydraulic-cammed Tri-power 390 should not be confused with the solid lifter, 401hp Galaxie version. Actually, they shared displacement and an oval air cleaner, but that was about it.

Unlike the Galaxie’s aluminum intake manifold, which was stepped-up to the rear, the T-Birds was cast flat to keep things level because engines sat horizontally in Thunderbirds but were mounted tail-low in full-sized Fords. On top of this unique M-Bird manifold sat a trio of Holley two-barrels; a 310-cfm primary sandwiched between two 350-cfm secondaries, all facing backward to clear the distributor & dashpot was bracketed to the front secondary for use with the T-Birds requested Cruise-O-Matic transmission. By comparison Tri-power Galaxies could not be ordered with an Automatic. Nor could they have power brakes or steering – both of which were standard on all Thunderbirds, including the M-series.

See our other auction for the M-series Thunderbird Tri-power setup!

Concept Car of the Week: Bugatti 18/3 Chiron (1999)

Fri, 22 Nov 2013

In 1998, Volkswagen AG acquired the French company Bugatti with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. After the luxurious EB112 and EB118 concepts, Ferdinand Piech commissioned Italdesign to work on another prototype: a Bugatti flagship supercar – the Chiron. While its predecessor, the mighty EB110, was a fantastic and bold design, it lacked a real Bugatti character.

Nissan e-NV200 electric van gets a headline starting price of £13,393

Tue, 20 May 2014

The Nissan e-NV200 electric van (pictured) – the start of an EV revolution for commercial vehicles? We’ve always been reluctant to see the electric car as a proper replacement for an ICE car, but an electric van for commercial deliveries in a reasonably confined area is a different animal altogether. So the arrival of the Nissan e-NV200 electric van is a big deal and could revolutionise how deliveries are made in our towns and cities, usefully shifting not just CO2, but NoX and particulates off to where the electricity is generated and making much less noise too.

Are Peugeot Citroen set to be bought out by GM?

Fri, 28 Jun 2013

Could GM take control of Peugeot Citroen? Last year we reported that Peugeot Citroen (PSA) and GM were forming a joint alliance to cut costs and develop new cars. But we questioned if the small savings of €2 billion a year from jointly developing new platforms and engines would do anything to stem the losses both companies were facing in Europe, and wondered if the only solution was a merger.
