It’s hard to believe now, but until Rolls Royce launched the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo in 1982 Bentleys were nothing more than re-badged Rolls Royces and accounted for an insignificant 5 per cent of Rolls Royce sales. But the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo changed all that and put Bentley on the road to success with the first ’Blower’ Bentley in half a century.

The new five-door Up hatch will cost £397 more than the three-door Up on the Continent; UK prices have yet to be revealed, but the three-door will kick off at £7995 when sales start on 6 March 2012. Number one of ten limited-edition Brabus EV12s struck a brooding figure at the tuner’s stand – hardly surprising with a 6.3-litre bi-turbo V12 under the bonnet and a £440,000 price tag. The E-class has been transformed into a tarmac-shredding supercar-chaser thanks to the introduction of a newly developed SV12 R bi-turbo engine which, Brabus claims, was implanted under the bonnet with 'almost surgical precision'.
