Almost 34,000 people have now signed a petition on the Number 10 website urging the Government to ‘not reduce the national speed limit to 50mph.’ It’s become the second most popular petition on the site – ahead of similar bids to stop the Government raising university tuition fees and beaten only by one calling for Gordon Brown to resign as prime minister.Cutting the UK’s national speed limits from 60mph to 50mph: the backgroundBack in March 2009, plans were announced that the Government wanted to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on single carriageways in rural areas. In fact, it’s starting to get a bit silly. You know the background; Top Gear did a review of the Tesla Roadster and implied it had a range of just 55 miles (although they did say that was on the Top Gear track), said that the motor overheated and reduced power (which they ‘illustrated’ with the Tesla slowing on a darkened track) and said the brakes broke (when a fuse had gone).

And that’s exactly what’s happening. Saab are waiting for investment funding from China – via Pang Da and Youngman – totalling €245 million which should put Saab back on a solvent footing – at least for a while – and allow the beleaguered Swedish car maker to resume production and push on with future plans.
