That’s £15k more than the standard Turbo, the money going on exhaust and engine management tweaks to give the twin-turbo 4.8-litre V8 an excessive-sounding 542bhp.

Unusually, at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show press day, the car on everyone’s lips was a model that many journalists have already driven, and for which dealers are already taking orders: the BMW i3. With its skinny tyres and boxy, upright stance, the all-electric model isn’t as easy on the eye as the usual headline-grabbers.
