1 in 10 men prefer cars to women

Just over 12% of men think that some beautiful cars can look better than women, according to a new survey commissioned by Volvo in collaboration with brainwave monitoring specialists MyndPlay.

In the interest of balance, women were also asked how they rank an attractive male compared to a good-looking car.

The outcome showed one third (33%) of females asked actually rated images of impressive car design higher than pictures of an attractive man. Does this mean females are bigger petrolheads than males, then!?

The survey used EEG – or “electroencephalogram” – technology to measure brain activity when performing cognitive tasks.

Recording these electronic brainwaves when looking at a number of different images, it was also found that men experienced more emotion when looking at images of beautiful car design than when looking at a picture of a crying child.

It seems there’s a gender divide on how humans rank the importance of stunning vehicles and needy babies, too – the women surveyed recorded almost double the “emotional intensity” of men towards the photo of a bawling baby.

Good car design is also beneficial for self-esteem it appears – 74% of men claimed that a smart looking motor made them feel positive, while 60% said that they were “confident and empowered” when behind the wheel of a beautiful car.

Volvo senior vice president of design, Thomas Ingenlath:

“This survey finally proves what we’ve always suspected. Beautiful car design can elicit strong emotional responses ranging from a positive frame of mind to a sense of empowerment.”
