1.7 million drivers consider insurance fraud

Fri, 18 Jul 2014

1.7 MILLION drivers in the UK would consider making a fraudulent insurance claim after an accident. Even if they were not hurt or not badly injured, these drivers believe it is acceptable to claim compensation.

Research by Gocompare shows 6% of UK drivers would consider making a false claim, while 3% would do whatever they could to claim money from an insurer. It was also revealed that 65% of drivers think their insurance premium is being pushed up by people making minor or fraudulent claims.

The same study also found 61% of drivers believe motorists should only claim for an injury of it caused them to miss work or directly affected their life. Even more drivers (67%) say personal injury lawyers should not be allowed to cold call or text people in an effort to generate more business and claims.

Lee Griffin of Gocompare said: ‘Unfortunately, with some personal injury lawyers offering attractive inducements there's no surprise that some drivers are persuaded to make costly claims despite being relatively unharmed by their accident. There need to be much tougher rules in place to prevent professionals from turning minor accidents into major personal injury claims in the pursuit of higher profits.
