2012 Mercedes SLK 55 AMG

The Mercedes SLK 55 AMG, which was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is to cost £54,950 in the UK.

The 2012 Mercedes SLK AMG 55 was revealed just before the Frankfurt Motor Show, and Mercedes told us it would go on sale in the UK in early 2012. So it’s a good job they’ve finally managed to come up with a price for the new SLK 55 AMG so at least UK buyers will finally know what they’ve got to stump up – £54,950.

Which is not exactly pocket money, but for your £55k you do get a proper little Mercedes rocket that offers a lot of fun.

The most powerful SLK ever, the 2012 SLK 55 AMG gets a naturally aspirated version of the new 5.5 litre we’ve seen in stuff like the CLS 63 AMG which delivers 414bhp and 398lb/ft of torque through Mercedes AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic ‘box.

That amount of power an torque is enough to throw the SLK 55 at the horizon at a rapid rate of knots – 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds – yet thanks to stuff like cylinder management, which can cut the SLK down to four cylinders under light loads, the new SLK has an average economy of 33.6mpg and emits a relatively lowly 195g/km.

Visually the new SLK AMG 55 acquires some of the cues from the SLS at the front, and the requisite AMG bodykit gives it a properly purposeful look. The specification is reasonable, although you will find yourself ticking a lot of option boxes if you want your SLK 55 to feel like a proper high-end Mercedes.

Top of that list will probably be the AMG Performance Pack which adds a revised suspension setup and brakes and throws in a limited slip diff for £4,105. Another appealing option tick would also be for the AMG Driver’s Pack, which takes off the limiter and  includes attendance at an AMG ‘Power and Passion’ driver event. That’ll cost you an extra £2,755.

But if you can stop yourself ticking any of the multitude of option boxes the 2012 Mercedes SLK 55 AMG will cost you £54,950. But we rather doubt many will walk out of their Mercedes dealers with a bog standard car.
