2013 Maserati Quattroporte engines revealed – new V6 & V8 Turbos

Wed, 05 Dec 2012

The 2013 Maserati Quattroporte will get a new 8-speed ZF auto ‘box, a new V6 turbo engine with 404bhp and a V8 twin turbo with 523bhp. 4WD option on V6.

But despite sharing photos of the new Quattroporte, Maserati didn’t see fit to let us know just how big the new Quattroporte will be nor what will be going on under the skin. But now, thanks to an early view by Motor Trend, we now know.

Under the bonnet will be a new entry-level engine, a V6 turbo with 404bhp and 406lb/ft of torque, enough to scoot the new Quattroporte to 60mph in just over 5 seconds and on to 177mph. The new engine, which uses a Chrysler Pentastar block, will also appear in the new Maserati Ghibli when that arrives and will be built by Ferrari at Maranello. It will also get the option of 4WD.

The more potent engine option will be a new 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo delivering 523bhp and 479lb/ft of torque and good for 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and 191mph. In addition, Maserati are contemplating both hybrid and diesel engine options for the Quattroporte later on.

Under the skin, the new Quattroporte makes extensive use of aluminium (as it does in the body) contributing to a weight loss of around 100kg from the current car, despite the overall length of the Quattroporte growing by 6.4″ (and the wheelbase by 4.2″ – all in the back seats).

Suspension is a new Skyhook setup with front control arms and a multilink back end with adjustable dampers and hydraulic steering. All sounds very promising.

The 2013 Maserati Quattroporte will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
