The 2014 Alfa MiTo (pictured) costs from £14,350

Alfa Romeo announced the changes for the 2014 MY Alfa MiTo back in June. But they’re not extensive. Cosmetic changes amount to very little, with just a chrome grill and tweaked headlight surrounds at the front, new alloys, Anthracite Grey paint, some new trim options and revised dash and the option of Alfa’s Uconnect Infotainment marking the 2014 model out from the 2013 one.

But the best change is the extra power Alfa has given the appealing 0.9 litre TwinAir – 105bhp, up from the old MiTo’s 85bhp – which manages to knock more than a second off the 0-62mph but still comes with the same official economy numbers – 67mpg and 99g/km.

They’re great figures in road tax terms – and BIK if your business is paying the bills – but you’ll have even less chance of getting even close to those figures now there’s more oomph to play with – you’ll be lucky to do much better than 40mpg in the real world.

Other engine options remain much the same, with the 1.4 litre MultiAir and the 1.4 TB MultiAir 168nhp QV the additional petrol options and the 1.3 JTDM-2 and 1.6 JTDM-2 the diesel offerings.

Prices start at £14,350 for the Alfa MiTo TB TwinAir 105hp Sprint  rising to £18,995 for the Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde.

It may not be the cheapest, but we’d opt for the Alfa MiTo TB TwinAir Sportiva at £16,300 – it’s a hoot.
