2015 Subaru Legacy revealed in Chicago

Thu, 06 Feb 2014

Subaru pulled the sheets off the 2015 Legacy sedan at the Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. The company says it's the roomiest version of the Legacy yet, boasting the largest passenger cabin in the midsize segment.

Two engines will be offered. The Legacy 2.5i gets a four-cylinder boxer engine making 175 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. It returns 26 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Upgraded models will get the company's boxer six-cylinder engine making 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. That engine returns 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

A CVT appears to be the only transmission option, and all-wheel drive is standard across the range. According to Subaru, the 2015 Legacy sedans get a refined version of the active torque split symmetrical AWD. A transfer clutch controls torque distribution, sending power where it's necessary.

The new Legacy received a redesign for the 2015 model year, some of which we saw in the concept. The nosecone front section combines the grille and bumper into one smooth piece, while an aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels. The windshield gets a steeper rake and all sedans now use active grille shutters in front to improve fuel economy. The Limited trim adds HID low-beam headlights as well as turn signals in the mirrors.

Subaru, a self-proclaimed leader in safety, equipped the Legacy with nearly all of its protective features including a new rollover sensor, welcome lights that illuminate both the interior and exterior at night, blind spot detection, lane-change assist and the new EyeSight integrates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane-departure warnings to detect and prevent impending front crashes before they happen.

The Legacy has the same footprint as the outgoing model, but is up in shoulder-, hip-, elbow- and legroom. The trunk is also slightly larger and features a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but last year's model started at $21,090 and topped out at $29,690.
