2015 VW Jetta makes global debut at New York auto show

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta is making its global debut at the New York auto show, and the changes for the new model year -- while not exactly breathtaking -- should help VW's volume-seller keep up with the competition. That includes the likes of the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze and 2015 Ford Focus, which are also showing off refreshes in the Big Apple.

To start, VW says the mildly redesigned front fascia reduces drag (and gives a “wider and more substantial look” to boot!) with a new bumper and air intakes. Certain models, like the GLI and Hybrid, get front and rear spoilers. And tucked behind the grille is a radiator shutter that can close to improve aerodynamics.

Buyers have a lot to think about when it comes to power: three gas-burners are offered -- a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated motor, a 1.8-liter turbo and a 2.0-liter turbo -- plus a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline/hybrid option. An efficient TDI diesel engine rounds out the offerings, and it's the powerplant we suspect fuel misers will opt for.

Certain versions of the 2015 VW Jetta, like the GLI and the hybrid, get revised rear spoilers. Overall, though, styling updates are fairly subtle.

That 2.0-liter turbodiesel, engine code EA888, manages 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, all while returning 32 mpg city/45 mpg highway for a combined estimated fuel economy of 37 mpg. Not a bad step up over the diesel in today's VW Jetta, which delivers 140 hp, 236 lb-ft of torque and 30 mpg city/42 mpg highway fuel economy.

Available tech features include blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, a frontal collision warning system and bi-xenon headlights with corner illumination. Mid- and upper-level trims get interior upgrades like chrome-edged gauges and new fabric colors. Certain models, like the GLI and hybrid, get LED taillights.

Pricing for the new 2015 VW Jetta and its myriad options hasn't been announced, but you can expect to see it in dealerships in the third quarter of 2014.
