Audi Q6 Confirmed

VW Group’s Head of Design, Walter de Silva, has confirmed Audi are planning to launch a ‘Sporty’ SUV to sit between the Q5 and Q7 – the Audi Q6.

We don’t know for certain that Audi will call the car they are planning to sit between the Q5 and Q7 will be the Audi Q6, but we’d be amazed if it’s not. But at least we now know it is definitely on its way.

Yesterday we reported that VW Group Design boss Walter de Silva had said VW were planning a sub compact SUV – to sit below the Tiguan – in conversation with Automotive News. We wouldn’t for a moment suggest Walter had enjoyed a good lunch before his chat with AN, but another little nugget slipped from his lips in conversation – official confirmation of the Q6.

The arrival of the Q6 isn’t exactly unexpected. We reported the plans for the Q6 back in February, and by June the rumours had grown so loud that Audi were about to announce plans for a Q6 that we reported again. But now they’re official.

As masters of the niche car, Audi were never going to let the grass grow under their feet once BMW’s X6 managed to return sales figures twice those initially projected, and Mercedes are also in the hunt for the same market with the coupe version of the M-Class due to arrive as the US built Mercedes MLC.

Walter also suggested that Audi were also considering a smaller SAV to sit between the Q3 and Q5 – which you’ll be amazed to learn could be the Audi Q4 – although he didn’t go as far as to suggest there could be a Q7 based Q8 coupe for the Chinese market as we did back in June.

But if there’s a niche to fill, Audi will fill it. This time with the Audi Q6, but keep your eyes open for a Q4 and Q8 in time.
