BMW Concept X4: Official

Fri, 05 Apr 2013

The BMW X4 – in concept form – has now been officially revealed ahead of its debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.

Yesterday we had the first photos of the X4, as the X4 Concept leaked, but now we get BMW’s official X4 details ahead of the debut of the Concept X4 at the Shanghai Motor Show at the end of April. And really, it’s very much what you’d expect.

Looking just like an X6 on a boil wash, the X4 gets the X3′s underpinnings to produce a new Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) to add to BMW’s burgeoning portfolio of SUV/Crossover/SAV which already accounts for 25 per cent of BMW sales across the world.

The X4 measures 4648mm long, 1915mm wide and 1622mm high – dimensions close to the X3, with the same wheelbase but a wider track – and, when it goes in to production for 2014 will be built in the US.

BMW’s press release on the X4 Concept is long on words, but short on content. There’s more than 1500 words telling us about the curves and creases – when all you really need is to know is the X4 is an X3 with a body that looks like an X6 with a few cues from the latest 3 Series and 4 Series – but nothing about drivetrains or the interior.

So we assume the interior is going to arrive direct from the X3 – but probably with a four-seat layout as standard (like the X6) – and that engines and drivetrain options will mirror those of the X3 in every market. Which, for the UK, means everything from the X4 xDrive 18d SE through to an X4 xDrive 35d M Sport.

Expect the BMW X4 – with a few tweaks to bumpers and wheels from the concept – to arrive in BMW showrooms in early 2014 at prices probably around £2.5-3k more than the comparable X3.
