BMW announces New York auto show lineup

Thu, 13 Mar 2014

BMW is bolstering its lineup for the New York auto show. Along with a handful of revised vehicles, the BMW X5 eDrive concept will be on stage showing off the latest technology in the company's goody bag.

The BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupe will offer its version of an off-road coupe with multiple choices under the hood. Starting with the two TwinPower turbo engines, the X4 xDrive28i will be equipped with a 2.0-liter four pot capable of cranking out 240 hp with 260 lb-ft of torque, starting at $45,625. The second boosted Bimmer -- the X4 xDrive35i -- will feature a 3.0-liter inline six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque for a base price of $48,925. Both X4s will include an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and all-wheel drive. Production of the duo will begin this spring.

The 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe.

As for the 4-series Gran Coupe, it too will feature a few different engines. Arriving in early summer, the 428i Gran Coupe will be equipped with the 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four, the same as the X4 xDrive28i. The 435i Gran Coupe will be stuffed with the same 3.0-liter straight six as the X4 xDrive 35i. The 4-series Gran Coupe will also be available with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The 428i will come in at a base price of $41,225, while the 425i will begin at $46,725.

With a top speed capability of 198 mph, the 2015 Alpina B6 Gran Coupe will show off a twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 cranking out 540 hp with 540 lb-ft of torque. This heavy hitter will be backed with an eight-speed automatic transmission equipped with Alpina Switch-Tronic and BMW's xDrive system. On sale this spring, the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe will come in at a base price of $118,225.

The X3 sDrive28d will be available for the first time in the U.S. in the spring of 2014.

The BMW concept X5 eDrive is a combination of BMW's 2.0-liter four and a 95-hp electric motor. In all-electric mode, the X5 eDrive claims a manufacturer-estimated 19-mile range at speeds up to 76 mph. An integrated lithium-ion battery pack resides in the luggage compartment floor. This layout is optimal for maximum interior capacity, according to BMW. The X5 eDrive gets a fuel efficiency rating of about 74 mpg in European testing.

The BMW X3 gets a new diesel engine in the form of the xDrive28d; the front-drive gasoline sDrive28i will also be new to the U.S. market. Powering the X3 xDrive28d is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel capable of producing 180 hp with 280 lb-ft of torque. The traditional xDrive X3 28i will be powered by the same turbo four as the X4 xDrive28i.

The new X3 will be available in the spring as a 2015 model with a base price of $39,325 for the xDrive28s, $40,725 for the xDrive28i, and $42,825 for the diesel.
