BMW featuring 2-series, M3, M4 and i-series at Detroit auto show

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

BMW laid out its plans for the Detroit auto show on Monday. The Roundel will bring its new 2-series coupe, M3 sedan, M4 coupe, i3 and i8 to the annual event. Here's what we know so far.

The BMW 2-series will replace the 1-series coupes, conforming to company's naming scheme where odd-number names are for sedans and even-number names are for two-doors. BMW says it will be offered both as a 228i (240 hp) and a 335i (322 hp), meaning they'll get the same turbocharged I4s and I6s as the outgoing 1-series. An M235i will sit atop the 2-series range, with go-fast bits from the other M cars.

The 2-series will launch in the first quarter of 2014, with a starting price of $33,025. Check out more on the 2-series here.

The BMW M4 will join the M3 at the Detroit auto show.

The 2014 Detroit auto show will also be the first time most of us get to see the new M3 sedan and M4 coupe in person. The best of Bimmer will debut side by side, sporting 425-hp, 406-lb-ft I6 engines, dual-clutch or manual transmissions and 0-60 sprint times less than 4 seconds. We took a deeper look at the Ms earlier this month.

BMW
The BMW i3 will debut in 2014.

Finally, the odd i3 and i8 will be featured. The i3 is BMW's first fully electric car, which the company says was built from the ground up primarily of carbon fiber. Its electric motor makes 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and is good for 80-100 miles of range. BMW says the i3 will offer 3-series space on shorter overall body. The i3 starts at $41,350, excluding destination, the range-extended, gas generator-equipped model comes in at $45,200. We checked out the i3 back in July.

BMW
The BMW i8 will hit dealerships in the second quarter of 2014.

The i8, a plug-in hybrid 2+2 sports car, will also be on display, carrying a base price of $135,700, excluding destination. It's made mostly of carbon fiber, and will come to the U.S. market in the second quarter of 2014. BMW says the i8 will get an estimated 94 mpg, and get to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 155 mph. The BMW i8 debuted at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Obviously BMW will have its entire fleet at the Detroit auto show, but the four above will be featured heavily. The i-series in particular will be noteworthy this year, because the vehicles will be production ready. Stay tuned for more Detroit coverage, as we expect to get news nearly daily from here on out.
