Bentley Mulsanne (2010) – New video. Bit boring.

The new Bentley Mulsanne - more dynamic than Bentley's new video lets on. We hope..

Bentley have been upping the PR on the new Bentley Mulsanne quite a bit of late. But we didn’t really play. They had a series of videos about the making of the Mulsanne. Which seemed potentially interesting. But they were so earnest – and populated in part by an eager and obviously devoted workforce whose commitment you had to admire but who had all the charisma of a modern back-bench politician – that we decided you’d probably fall asleep before you finished watching. Always assuming we’d stayed awake long enough to process and post them.

But a driving video is different. That’s proper car stuff – so we’ve put it up. But we struggled a bit even with this to stay awake. The backing track is somnambulistic. The driver is surely older than Bentley’s target demographic and the video’s about as exciting as a 1970s Open University programme on town planning.

Surely the point of this impressive new Bentley Mulsanne is that it’s dynamic and worth driving? Why show a late middle-aged guy coasting round pretty countryside to dreary music? The Rolls Royce Phantom would do that much better.

Shouldn’t the video have a contemporary soundtrack? And this thing should handle – and if it doesn’t it’s pointless – so show it being a bit dynamic. Let’s also have a driver that looks a bit like he’s made a few bob and still gets a buzz from life (Luca Di Montezemolo’s probably available). Accentuate the positive and the negative.

Show us detail; swooping shots of the contentious headlights (which we love – a great 21st century interpretation of a real Bentley nose) and float round the Jay-Lo arse (which we don’t – too Bangle-esque. Although it looks just fine on Ms Lopez). Be dynamic. Be upbeat. Be positive. Think 21st Century Bentley Boys.

Well, that’s Bentley told. But not to worry. They probably wouldn’t have sent us a new Mulsanne to play with anyway. We might have driven it at more than 40mph.
