Bentley at Geneva: Bentley Continental Flying Star

The glorious Bentley Flying Star Shooting Brake

I suppose, strictly speaking, the headline should read: ‘Touring Superleggera at Geneva: Flying Star‘, but then who’s going to look for Touring Superleggera? And this really is a Bentley. A proper, old school Bentley. Even though it’s based on a VW era Bentley – the Continental GT.

Don’t ask why, but the whole ‘Shooting Brake’ Concept floats my petrol-head boat. When we reported that Touring Superleggera were making a Bentley Shooting Brake a week or two ago, I knew I’d love it. On paper it’s as daft and pointless as they come – a two door coupe estate. What’s the point? A super luxury, high performance coupe with a glorified parcel shelf bolted on the back.

But somehow its almost pointlessness endows it with huge appeal. And for some peculiar reason the transformation in to shooting brake makes the Bentley Continental look like an old school Bentley. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the Bentley Continental. It’s a fine car. It’s just not a ‘Bentley Boys’ Bentley. It’s a ‘Corporate Bentley’, not a ‘W.O’ Bentley.

But the quirkiness of the shooting brake concept transforms the Continental. Touring Superleggera say you can personalise the Flying Star, and that just 20 are going to be made. How much? Well, that’s open to debate. We’ve send an email to Touring Superleggera to try and confirm, because the press release they sent us seems to suggest an astronomical price.  The relevant bit says:

Touring Superleggera undertakes a limited production run of up to 20 units of the Continental Flying Star. This series will be exclusively built to special order and customer specifications. The car is offered at a basic price of 2 590.000 when based on a Continental GTC – 560 PS. Other versions on request.

Maybe we’re being stupid, but that looks like €2,590,000. Which can’t be right. We’re sure the ’2′ is a typo and it’s €590,000. Or maybe they’re so old school at Touring Superleggera the price is in Lira?

We’ll find out and update. But we still love the Bentley Flying Star by Touring Superleggera. Whatever the price.

Update: The ’2′ is a typo. Somewhere along the line the Euro symbol got scrambled in to a ’2′. So it’s €590,000 for the Bentley Flying Star. Plus tax. Plus toys. Worth every penny.
