Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Special Edition hits Monterey

Sun, 19 Aug 2012

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Special Edition is just another ‘Special Edition’ Veyron, this time for Pebble Beach.

However special the Bugatti Veyron is, it’s hard to get excited when the press release drops in the inbox with the heading ‘Special Edition Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse debuts at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering’. Because you just know it won’t be special. And it’s not.

Yes, the Grand Sport Vitesse is special with its 7.9 litre W16 engine (when did Bugatti stop calling the Veyron’s engine 8.0 litres?), 1200 horses, 1015lb/ft of torque, 0-62mph in 2.6 seconds and 245mph top speed. But when did a paint job make a car ‘Special’?

Bugatti has resorted to history to justify this Grand Sport Vitesse as a special edition, with a paint job in Bianco and Light Blue inspired by the 1928 Type 37A, an open wheel racer now owned by American petrolhead Jay Leno, with a Cognac leather interior (although its looks ‘Tan’ to us)..

But that’s hardly enough to make this Veyron a ‘Special Edition’ for Pebble Beach, especially as the paint job is one of the first things any buyer of a Veyron will specify.

But if you’re desperate to have this particular Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, it’ll set you back €1.74 million. Plus VAT.
