CDN–GM Interactive Design Competition winners announced at NAIAS

Mon, 21 Jan 2013

The winners of the CDN–GM Interactive Design Competition have been announced at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Following a guided tour of the auto show with the GM design team, the finalists gathered on the GMC stand in Cobo Hall where Mark Adams and Ken Parkinson – heads of design for Cadillac & Buick, and Chevrolet & GMC respectively – were joined by Car Design News' Editor Owen Ready to present the winners of each brand's competition brief.

Joining them on stage were the mentors from GM's design teams who interacted with the entrants throughout the competition to critique and help develop their work, making this a truly unique contest.

After seven months of hard work, over 200 entries and nearly 2,000 comments from peers and mentors, the winners of this latest CDN–GM Interactive Design Competition, selected from 16 finalists are:

Buick – next-generation Lacrosse
Edward Tseng (username: Edwardtseng), Art Center College of Design

Cadillac – next SRX
Alvin Tseng (Alvint), Art Center College of Design

Chevrolet – next Camaro
Namsuk Lee (N. Lee), College for Creative Studies

GMC – next Terrain
Reymin De Leon (Reymin D.), Humber College

Highly Commended
Namwoo Kim (namwoo7), College for Creative Studies

All of the above were awarded a paid internship at GM's design studios in Warren, Michigan to experience life as a professional car designer.

In addition to the prize for his Buick entry Edward Tseng was awarded the "Best use of Alcantara Material" by the Italian materials company and "Best use of luxury materials" by another of the competition's partners, CGT. Edward and his twin brother, Alvin – winner of the Cadillac brief – must have made the Tseng family very proud!

This was the most successful CDN-GM Interactive Competition yet and the very nature of the contest allows every entrant, not just those who win, to learn and develop their skills.

The CDN-GM Competions now span three continents with the CDN–Opel/Vauxhall contest in Europe and the CDN–GM/PATAC China in Asia joining this North American edition.

A video of the prize-giving is coming soon.
