Car Design News Awards: Nissan IDx and BMW i3 named best Concept and Production cars

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

The Nissan IDx and BMW i3 were the recipients of Car Design News' Car Designs of the Year Awards in Geneva last night.

This year, for the first time, our Car Design of the Year Awards were voted for by a jury of 12 professional car designers, adding an extra layer of gravitas. Nissan's VP and chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura was at the Car Design Night event at Bypass in Geneva to accept the award.

The Nissan IDx gained universal praise for its great mix of heritage and ability to engage with a new generation of motorists.

Meanwhile the BMW i3 was a runaway winner of the Production car category - finally a car that feels holistic in its approach to electric mobility. Jacob Benoit, head of BMW i design accepted the award on behalf of his team.

Both cars were up against 11 competitors in their respective categories. The i3 fended off the Jaguar F-Type Coupe and Porsche 918 Spyder, which were runners up, while the Nissan came out on top with the Cadillac Elmiraj and Volvo Concept Coupe in second and third places respectively.

The full results as well as in-depth stories on all these cars, plus profiles of the judges are included in Car Design News' first ever book, Car Design Review 1, which was also launched at the event.
