Chevrolet Spark EV revealed

Tue, 27 Nov 2012

The Chevrolet Spark EV – an electric version of the Spark – has been revealed ahead of the Los Angles Auto Show this week with a 130hp electric motor.

Key to the appeal of the new Chevy Spark EV is the sort of power and performance you’d normally only see in a little hot hatch. The Spark EV comes with an electric motor that churns out 130hp and a massive 400lb/ft of torque. That means a 0-60mph in under 8 seconds.

With that sort of performance – and the hugely appealing big torque figures – the Chevy Spark EV promise to be a proper little city pocket rocket, perfect for blatting round urban landscapes in complete silence.

Better still, Chevrolet are claiming that Spark EV’s Combo DC Fast Charging capability means it can be charged to 80 per cent of capacity in 20 minutes and, claim Chevrolet, will have amongst the best EV ranges on the market. Although we rather doubt that will be the case in the real world with all that torque under your right foot.

Of course, the Spark EV is still a toy for the better off and can’t replace a proper ICE car as your only drive. Chevrolet are saying the Spark EV will cost $25k in the States after tax breaks, which means that if it ever gets to the UK it will probably cost much the same in GBP.

Still, the Chevy Spark EV looks a hoot, just as long as you don’t mind paying through the nose.
