Chevrolet is taking orders nationwide for the 2012 Volt

Chevrolet has opened the order window for the 2012 Volt to buyers in all 50 states.

The 2012 model carries a base price of $39,995, including an $850 destination charge. That's $1,005 less than the base price of the 2011 model because the navigation system is now optional instead of standard equipment.

Some customers will be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, effectively dropping the price to $32,495.

The 2012 Volt will have seven option packages, compared with three packages for the 2011 model.

A fully optioned Volt--which includes leather trim, backup camera, navigation system, premium paint and wheels--will sticker at $46,265.

The Volt gets two new paint colors for 2012. On the inside, red and white accents will now be offered.

Also new for 2012:

-- Standard keyless access with passive locking. The car automatically locks and unlocks with the key fob in close proximity of the vehicle.

-- OnStar Turn-by-Turn navigation is standard for three years.

-- Chevrolet MyLink including Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones (late availability).

-- Available 17-inch sport alloy wheels with black inserts (late availability).
