Chris Bangle's ‘Illustrate the Future’ competition winner announced

Mon, 23 Apr 2012

Renowned designer Chris Bangle announced the winner of the ‘Illustrate the Future' design competition as Luis Fernando Peña Delgado at the end of the Interior Motives China conference yesterday.

22-year-old Delgado, a student of design at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia, was chosen by the judges under the direction of Bangle on the basis that his entry best followed the criteria of closeness to the original text, the quality of the illustrations and the creative content.

The global competition's brief asked for students from any design discipline to examine excerpts from the eBook "Peter Teuful, A Tale of car design in Three parts" – written by Bangle himself – and translate them into a series of images.

The founder Chris Bangle Associates studio in Turin, Italy, said, "Luis' work showed a passion for the elements to be designed in the story, and in particular the jury and I were inspired by his illustration technique that was at once precise enough to grasp yet left much to the imagination.

"His use of line-work without heavy shadows gave the drawings a good sense of life and made them seem almost prescient--as if I had been basing the text on them and not the other way around," he added.

Delgado will have the choice of two prizes, one being a one-week visit to the CBA Studio in Italy, including a design workshop with Chris Bangle or €2000.

The other nine finalists as selected by the judgers are Edgar Andres Sarmiento Garcia, Stefano Drago, Andrea Bertossi, Jacopo Bobbo, Geser Alan Dos Santos Silva, Massimo Bertoletti, Gerardo Delgado Martinez, Bruno Maria Arena, Dario Pellegrino.

Two of the entries were deemed by the judges to be worthy of a special mention. The first went to 21-year-old Antonio Orsini, whose family submitted his designs after he passed away, and the judges were hugely impressed at his interpretations and creative potential. The second went to Marta Muschietti, a fashion student from the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia.

The eBook "Peter Teuful, A Tale of car design in Three parts", will be on sale from 25 June on Amazon.
