Eric Clapton’s Ferrari SP12 EC ‘Official’

Sun, 27 May 2012

Eric Clapton’s new Ferrari was all over the place in March as it sat in pride of place in a glass box at H.R. Owen’s in London. Except officially it wasn’t God’s new Fezza as Ferrari weren’t offering up any official information. But now it is.

The latest edition of Ferrari’s magazine features a piece on Mr Clapton’s new Ferrari SP12 EC, which derives its moniker from ‘SP’ for ‘Special Projects, ’12′ from the Ferrari 512 BB which inspired Eric’s new car and ‘EC’ for the man himself.

The SP12 EC was designed by Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with Pininfarina and Maranello to build Eric a Ferrari that was both current and evoked styling from one of slowhand’s favourite Ferraris, the 512 BB.

The news from Ferrari is as much a trailer for the next edition of the Ferrari Magazine where Eric talks about his passion for Ferrari and how the idea of the one-off special was born as anything else. Ferrari can’t resist comparing the SP12 EC to the creation of music, with the right notes in the right place to build the perfect car – just like a musical score.

Despite Maranello’s lyrical waxing about the Clapton Fezza we don’t actually get any more than we already knew, but perhaps we’ll learn in the magazine article whether the changes wrought are purely cosmetic or whether Eric’s new baby gets more power from the 458′s V8?

We’ll let you know.
