Jeremy Clarkson with Ferrari FF & 458 at Paul Ricard

Which is the better car, the Ferrari FF or the Ferrari 458? You won’t be surprised to learn that Jeremy Clarkson has been out playing at Paul Ricard to see whether Ferrari’s faux SUV has the measure of the 458 Italia.

The Ferrari FF is Ferrari’s controversial replacement for the 612 Scaglietti. It has four seats – always a recipe for massive depreciation in a Ferrari – and, for the first time in a car from Maranello, 4WD.

Powering the FF is an engine that’s rapidly disappearing from the carscape – a V12. In the FF it develops 650bhp from its 6.0 litres, hitting 62mph in 3.7 seconds whilst carrying four adults in reasonable comfort.

The other side of the dog fight is the Ferrari 458 Italia. Considered by many to be the most complete supercar in production, the 458 gets a 4.5 litre mid-mounted V8 with 570bhp and a 0-62mph of 3.4 seconds. So it should have no trouble taking the lardy FF.

But this is a Clarkson DVD, so there’s a twist in the tail.

The Ferrari fight is taking place at the Paul Ricard Circuit in sunny Provence, so Jeremy’s hope for a quick flurry of snow is a wish too far. But perhaps a nice little shower on just one part of Paul Ricard would be enough to make it all go wrong for the 458? Clear skies make that unlikely too.

But Jeremy has a plan.
