Fiat 500byGucci - and Natasha Poly

Did the U.S know what it was letting itself in for when it started to buy the Fiat 500? Well, it’s going to find out soon enough with Fiat launching both the tin top 500byGucci and the convertible 500c Gucci in the States in December.

Just like MINI, the Fiat 5090 is a style statement, rather than just mere transport. And that statement is reinforced by endless variations on a theme courting whims within the buyer to shift metal.

So a Fiat 500 with a Gucci badge is aimed at the trendy, urban fashionistas; perfect for looking cool, elegant and European in the centre of an American metropolis.

Which might explain why Fiat intend launching the 500 with a Gucci badge during  New York Fashion Week – the second week of September – to get their metal in front of their entire target audience in one go.

So what will the American trendies get in the Gucci Fiat? Well, as far as we can tell, they’ll get just what the rest of us did, although we’re not sure America will get the one saving grace of the 500 Gucci marketing – Natasha Poly’s legs.

That means a choice of black or white paint jobs with chrome bits bolted on, Gucci red and green stripes liberally applied and the interlocking ‘GG’ logo on the hubcaps (don’t ask).

Lucky Fiat Gucci buyers will also be able to avail themselves of the ’500 by Gucci Collection’, a range of overpriced ‘Lifestyle’ product to go with their new car. On offer will be travel accessories, sunglasses, watches, track suits and driving gloves.

So you can go for a drive in your new Fiat 500 Gucci Convertible, resplendent in your Gucci shell suit, sunglasses and watch and think the world is smiling at how cool you are. Look a bit closer and you may discover it’s actually laughing, not smiling.
