Fiat 500X compact crossover debuts

The Fiat 500X is the latest member of the Fiat 500 family to arrive, and following a recent tease it’s debuted at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Fiat has decided to go the same route with the 500X as they did with the 500 L by creating two models – a 500X for the city and a 500X for the country.

The 500X gets the same family design as the rest of the 500 range and sits on the same platform as the new Fiat Punto and comes in at 4.25 metres long (the butch version is just a couple of centimetres wider) and 1.80m wide.

Boot space is adequate at 350 litres and Fiat want us to believe that the 500X majors on high quality materials, and they also want us to dig deep to personalise the 500X with a choice of 12 colours for the body and eight wheel choices before you start on the options list.

Engine choice will be from four petrol and three diesel engines, with a 94bhp 1./3 litre turbodiesel with 5-speed manual, 1.6 litre turbodiesel with 118bhp and six-speed manual ‘box and a 4WD 138bhp 2.0 litre diesel with either a six-speed manual or new nine-speed auto.

Petrol choices are 108bhp 1.6 litre with a five-speed manual, 138bhp 1.4 litre turbo with a six-speed manual or six-speed twin-cluch ‘box or the 4WD 1.4 litre turbo with 168bhp.

There’s a choice of Drive Modes, with Auto for frugal running, Sport if you want to hustle and All Weather for extra grip, and in the butch version the All Weather mode gets replaced by a Traction mode that directs torque to the back in 4WD models or turns on the Traction Plus on FWD cars.

The Fiat 500X will arrive in the UK in the second quarter of 2015 and Fiat will reveal pricing closer to that time.
