The 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine arrives in the 2012 Ford Focus

Ford has announced that the new Focus is now available with the 1.0 litre Ecoboost 3-cylinder engine in 100 PS and 125 PS options.

Back in September, Ford revealed that it planned to install its new pocket-sized engine – the new 3-cylinder 1.0 litre Ecoboost – in to the new Ford Focus, giving the Focus the power of a naturally aspirated 1.6 litre petrol, but with improved economy and lower emissions. And now it’s arrived.

Ford will be offering the 1.0 litre Ecoboost in two power levels – 100 PS and 125 PS – with sales starting in the UK in February.

In the five door Focus with the 125 PS version, economy is decent enough at 56.5mpg and emissions are a class-leading 114g/km. The 100 PS version improves on the figures for the 125 PS by averaging 58.9mpg and emitting an even more frugal 109g/km.

Savings don’t end at the fuel pump either with the 1.0 litre Ecoboost. Road tax will be free in the first year and just £20 a year on the 100 PS and £30 a year on the 125 PS, a chunk cheaper than the 1.6 litre petrol Focus. Business drivers will also see a BIK rate of just 13 per cent.

Mark Ovenden, Ford UK MD, said:

Gone are the days when the number of cylinders dictates performance.  This highly efficient, technically advanced powertrain is not only great fun to drive, but it delivers fuel economy improvements and ultra-low CO2 emissions which lead to real world cost savings for our customers.

The new Focus with the 1.0 litre Ecoboost goes on sale next month (February) at £250 more than the 1.6 litre 125PS engine currently in the Focus.
