Honda F1 is sold – unofficial

Sun, 28 Dec 2008

The rumour-mill (surprise, surprise) has been working overtime on the precarious state of the Honda F1 team. We knew there were a few contenders, with the money and the expertise, vying for the team, but its seemed that Prodrive’s boss David Richards was in pole position. Seems not.

Reports are coming from La Stampa in Italy that a deal has been done to buy the Honda F1 Team, and the buyer is a relatively unknown (at least in Europe) Telecoms tycoon, Carlos Slim.

Carlos Slim of Telmex - New owner of the Honda F1 Team?

Slim runs a company called Telmex, which runs over 70% of Telecoms in Latin America and, it is claimed, is the second richest man in the world. Guess he can afford it then.

This could be a rich man’s toy, but it could herald a sparkling future for the team. Telmex already sponsors Bruno Senna (nephew of the great Ayrton) and it looks likely that if this deal is for real we could have a Senna back in F1. And if he’s half as good as his uncle, Jenson Button will have a real challenge on his hands with Bruno Senna taking over Rubens Barrichello’s seat in the team.

A quote from Ayrton Senna in 1993 could be prophetic. “You think I’m fast? You should see my nephew!”. Looks like we might.

Things could get interesting.
