Honda FCEV concept for 2013 LA debut

Tue, 12 Nov 2013

Honda has revealed an official sketch of its new FCEV concept that will debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Motor Show.

Normally, this wouldn’t be much of a reason to raise even an eyebrow, but Honda has also confirmed that this new concept points to the future design direction of its next fuel cell electric vehicle.

Given that, you can probably guess that FCEV stands for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. This new model, which is appearing in concept guise in LA, will go on to form the basis of Honda’s next hydrogen production vehicle – set to become available in America and Japan in 2015.

European versions will follow slightly later. At this stage it’s unclear whether Honda plans to sell the new FCEV, or simply lease it to businesses and private customers, in the manner of the FCX Clarity – around 24 of which are still currently being used for evaluation purposes around the world.

Honda says it remains committed to fuel cells as a source of zero-emissions power, in spite of infrastructure difficulties that are far greater than those faced by battery electric vehicles.

Typically powered by hydrogen – though Honda has not been specific in this instance, and there are other types – fuel cells use a chemical reaction to create electric energy, which is then used to power a motor that drives the wheels. The only emissions from a hydrogen fuel cell take the form of water vapour.

The new Honda FCEV concept will be unveiled on Thursday 20 November at the 2013 LA Motor Show. MSN Cars will be there.
