Hyundai Veloster

Thu, 13 Jan 2011

Hyundai has launched the new Veloster at the 2011 NAIAS. The bright orange showcar is an interesting concept, which sports a Mini Clubman-esque third door on one side of the car.

However, what this equates to is an elongated wheelbase to accommodate the extra aperture. As a result, in side profile the car appears at odds with the tight, muscular styling around other aspects of the car. The DRG takes in a large grille section that is split into a large lower air vent, flanked by large fog lights, and a smaller upper grille. The heavily drawn back headlights dominate the upper facia of the car.

The rising DLO of the car makes the rear quarter appear quite cumbersome on the side sans door, although this is alleviated somewhat by the double wheelarch surface and large diameter wheels. Around the rear, the caricatured rear bumper diffuser element and high set rear lamps give the car an impression of height, again, sitting slightly at odds with the front of the car.

Inside, the Veloster's IP takes a dynamic, if not slightly conservative approach. The shrouded binnacles add a sporting element to the swathes of black plastic, that are interspersed with silver sections. The two-tone effect extends to the door cards, which sport stylized door-pulls, mimicking the detail around the central tunnel of the car. The silver and black two-tone finish and and contrasting fabrics helps add to the feeling of sporting intent suggested by the binnacle layout.
