Hyundai Veloster caught out testing

The Hyundai Coupe has always fought well above its weight. It was the first sign from Hyundai that they could take on the best from Japan and come out fighting. But the Hyundai Coupe is nearing the end of its life and will be replaced in 2011 by a new car based on the Hyundai Veloster Concept, first seen at the Seoul Motor Show in 2007.

And it looks as if the Veloster is making good progress to market if the spy shots of it out testing – admittedly with heavy camouflage – that have turned up on the Hyundai Blog are anything to go by.

Hyundai say that the Veloster will be 70-80% the same as the impressive concept and should be thought of as a “Four-passenger CRX” – a car you can go out and have fun in and still be economical – and will probably compete head-on with the new Honda CR-Z.

Hyundai’s description of the Veloster as a “compact utility vehicle; a stylish coupe with hatchback practicality” does make it an appealing prospect. Power is likely to come from a 168bhp 4-pot turbo petrol and possibly the new 2.0 litre 198bhp lump straight out of the new Hyundai i40. Diesel options are inevitable, at least in Europe.

Looks very promising.
