Jaguar E-Type is 'most-wanted' classic car

Thu, 28 Aug 2014

THE ICONIC Jaguar E-type is the most desirable classic car for drivers in the UK. The British sports car topped a poll of great cars we’d most like to have in our garages.

Reasons for the E-Type Roadster being most popular were as diverse as its curvaceous lines to the sound of the exhaust when driving on a country road. Some also said they would just keep the E-Type in the garage to look at rather than drive.

Second place went the Aston Martin DB5 as used by James Bond, and unsurprisingly this car was more popular with men than women. More women chose the Jaguar E-Type and pushed it into top place.

Coming third in the list is the ever popular Mini, with many drivers saying they would love another as it was the first car the owned or the one they learned to drive in. A Mini Cooper S is the most sought after and most drivers want one in the familiar red with a white roof colour combination.

The survey by ISI Secure found the MGB Roadster in fourth place, which rated highly with older drivers who have fond memories of the car when new. Close behind the MGB is the Land Rover Series II, which has gained popularity with younger drivers looking for something fun, affordable and versatile that is also cheap to insure.

Porsche scored sixth place with its long-running 911 and drivers are not bothered about which model so long as it has the classic coupe shape. The Ford Mustang was hot on the heels of the Porsche with seventh place, while Ferrari makes an appearance in eighth with its 308 as middle-aged drivers remember watching Magnum PI and the 308 that appeared in the detective series.

Another television detective’s car makes it into ninth place with the Jaguar MkII as used in Inspector Morse evoking feel-good memories in many drivers. Rounding out the top 10 is the Fiat 500 that lots of drivers described as ‘cute’.
