Jaguar XF axed

Thu, 07 Jun 2012

What happens when a new Jaguar has gone from clay model to production car? It seems at Jaguar it gets axed.

Don’t panic. Jaguar hasn’t actually axed the 2012 XF. Well, it has, but only a clay model.

There’s something incredibly appealing and old school about clay models of cars. Exquisitely crafted by modellers who, in a different age, would have been masters of porcelain, they’re designed to give form to ideas; a CAD brought to life in nature’s own modelling material.

But what happens to the clay cars when the model they portray either gets dropped or moves in to production? Do car makers store them or put them on display? It seems not.

If this video from Jaguar is anything to go by it seems Jaguar clay cars are used as stress therapy for overworked staff. Take three men, dress them the same, put an axe in their hands and stand well back.

It seems such a waste of something so lovingly crafted. But it does look cathartic.
