LA Motor Show: Subaru WRX gets downsized engine

Thu, 21 Nov 2013

SUBARU has revealed a production-ready version of the WRX concept first seen earlier this year.

The latest edition of the performance saloon may not be coming to the UK at all, but Subaru has finally given the 268bhp machine the go-ahead for Japan and North America.

A new 2.0-litre ‘boxer’ engine carries on the brand’s tradition, bringing with it the same low centre of gravity as the old 2.5-litre unit but with greater environmental credentials.

Its power and torque outputs are both slightly greater than from the 2.5, while the turbo mapping has been changed to give the car more thrust at lower engine speeds, as well as a flatter torque curve in the mid-range.

No performance figures have been released yet, though, which will leave many enthusiasts disappointed.

The bodyshell is stiffer and lighter than before, further helping to lower the centre of gravity, and a 25mm wheelbase increase allows for more legroom for rear passengers.

Also now lighter are the alloy wheels, while the interior has seen huge strides in quality. A new steering wheel features a flattened bottom for a sporting feel, and supportive sports seats are standard-fit.

Depending on customer response and initial sales figures Subaru could be prepared to add more powerful variants to the range, replicating the hierarchy of old and famous badges like STi.

Buyers in Britain will have to wait to learn whether or not the WRX will be officially imported. However, if it isn’t, a ‘grey import’ market similar to that which initially brought the car to the UK in the 1990s could be created.
