Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder revealed

Thu, 20 Nov 2008

The Lamborghini LP560 has been with us for a few months now, so bang on cue Lamborghini has announced the convertible version – The Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder (what a mouthful – I think we’ll just stick with ‘LP560′).

The Spyder version of the original Gallardo was always one of our favourites. It gave away so little to the hard-top version it really made sense to have the convertible – a rare thing with a performance car. To be totally fair, the F430 does pull off the same trick, but it’s always astonishing to find such a well-sorted softop supercar. Especially when you see what a cock-up Aston Martin made of the wonderful DB9 when they chopped the top off. Hopefully they’ll do better with the upcoming DBS Volante.

The original Gallardo was a real thorn in the side of the F430, which is if course what it was designed to be. But there’s always room for improvement, and the LP560 has addressed most of those, especially in the styling department. But a chunk more power, and a better suspension geometry, make for a spine-tingling car.

The LP560 Spyder does give away a bit on acceleration to its coupe brother (Lamborghini quote ‘around 4 seconds’ to 60mph, instead of the hard-top’s 3.7 seconds). But in the real world you won’t notice much difference. Especially as you’ll be busy hanging on to your hair at that rate of acceleration! Top speed is a also a smidge lower, but who ever gets there anyway?

The order book for the LP560 Spyder is now open, with first deliveries expected in Spring 2009. You can tell that Lamborghini is now part of the Porsche Empire. Onwards and Upwards!
