Land Rover Discovery range to grow with new models

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

The Land Rover Discovery name is to be used on a new family of vehicles in a similar way to the Range Rover model range, the firm revealed at the Geneva Motor Show 2014.

Currently used on the recently updated 2014 Discovery, the name will become a brand in 2015 as Land Rover broadens the range by introducing all-new model lines.

Group marketing director Phil Popham revealed to MSN that these cars will be focused on versatility and practicality. ”They will be the most versatile cars you can possibly have… the Discovery has always been incredibly versatile and clever and this is what we will be promoting with this new range.”

“It’s a luxury car, it’s a van, it’s a seven-seater… it’s incredibly clever. We aim to own this versatility leg with the new Discover family.”

THE LAND ROVER FAMILIES

Jaguar believes the success it’s had in creating the Range Rover family of luxury cars will give it the experience to do the same with the Land Rover Discovery range – and, in time, the Land Rover Defender too.

It is Land Rover’s plan to offer a range of Range Rovers, a range of Discoverys and a Range of Defenders, all grouped under the Land Rover banner.

All Land Rovers offer a blend of luxury, versatility and capability, said Popham. “For Range Rover, the luxury dial is turned up; we’ll nudge up versatility with the Discovery range and ensure we have leading levels of capability with the future Defender range.

“They are distinct in what we focus on but all are underpinned with the Land Rover oval – it’s on all the cars now. The capability of Land Rover is what makes (and will make) all the cars unique.”

Land Rover revealed at the show that the first new Land Rover Discovery family model will arrive in 2015; the firm also revealed a teaser graphic showing an outline with a bold forward-rake B-pillar, the iconic Discovery stepped room but also a much more sporty rake to the front and rear screens than is traditional for the Discovery.

More details will follow throughout the year as we build up to the 2015 launch of the new Land Rover Discovery family.
