Maserati’s 50,000 sales target starting to look possible

When Sergio Marchionne revealed in 2011 that he wanted Maserati sales to hit 50,000 a year by 2015, we were all very sceptical. After all, Maserati were only managing fewer than 6,000 sales a year at that time, so a target of 50,000 a year seemed mad. But it’s starting to look a distinct possibility.

In the first nine months of 2013, Maserati has managed to shift 22,500 cars, with 9,900 of the new Quattroporte finding a home, 7,900 new Ghiblis and around 5,000 of the Gran Turismo and Gran Cabrio all being snapped up by buyers impressed by Maserati’s latest offerings.

Extrapolated in to annual sales, that means Maserati is already heading for 30,000 sales a year, and thatr’s before the new Maserati Levante SUV arrives.

The Levante SUV is expected to sell in the region of 20-25,000 a year which, if Maserati manage that, will mean their target of 50,000 sales a year by 2015 is bang on target.

When you consider that Maserati’s best year so far was in 2008 when they sold 9,000 cars, and that 2012 saw sales of just 6,300, a likely sales total for 2013 of 30k cars is a massive achievement.

And to go from just of 6k in 2012 to 50k in 2015 will be spectacular.
