Mazda’s new 2 will be the first model to premiere the company’s latest downsized Skyactiv diesel engine, it has confirmed. The Japanese car maker today revealed the technical specifications of its new 1.5-litre oil-burner, which promises to be highly efficient and low-polluting.

The new member of the eco-friendly Skyactiv engine family produces 103bhp at 4000rpm and 184lb ft of torque between 1500-2500rpm, says Mazda.

The 1.5 Skyactiv-D features a low (for a diesel) 14.8:1 compression ratio, an intercooler that’s integrated into the intake manifold for better acceleration response and exhaust gas recirculation for better economy.

Mazda’s start-stop and brake energy regeneration systems ensure that the new Mazda 2 will be Euro-6 compliant without the use of expensive exhaust solutions.

And, more importantly in CO2-obsessed Europe, the Mazda 2 1.5 Skyactiv-D will emit less than 90g/km of CO2, according to the company.

Based on the Hazumi concept revealed at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the new Mazda 2 will start production in 2015.

Mazda wants to increase its sale volumes in the growing supermini sector - so the new 2 will play a key role when it finally hits the market.

Let’s just hope this efficient engine is matched by the sporty styling of the concept car.
