Mazda reveals date for all-new MX-5

Fri, 04 Jul 2014

Mazda has confirmed that the all-new fourth generation Mazda MX-5 (ND) will be unveiled in September 2014.

The new MX-5 will be shown simultaneously at events in the USA, Japan and Barcelona in Spain. 2014 also marks the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the first MX-5 – also know as the Eunos Roadster and Mazda Miata – in 1989.

There will in fact be two events in Spain. The first, on 3-4 September, will be the official unveiling; the second, on 5 September, will be a gathering of MX-5 enthusiasts from across Europe. Both will celebrate the 25th anniversary under a “Long live the Roadster” tagline.

The MX-5 is officially the Guinness World Record holding best-selling two-seater car of any kind. As of the end of May, nearly 945,000 examples had been produced, so the car is rapidly closing in on the million mark.

Its success is due to a simple, lightweight, front-engined, rear-wheel drive formula – and the car single-handedly revived the small roadster market in the early 1990s. No other carmaker has ever been able to mount a sustained challenge to Mazda’s incredible success story.

Technical details of the new MX-5 are scarce, although the bare chassis was displayed at this year’s New York motor show. Strong rumours suggest that the new car may receive a turbocharged engine, boosting both performance and efficiency.

We look forward to bringing you more news about the all-new Mazda MX-5 mk4 soon.
