McLaren 625C Coupe & Spider. So THAT’s what it is

The McLaren 625C Coupe & Spider arrive for Asian buyers

Early last month we reported that there was a McLaren 625C on the way, even if it made no sense. It made no sense because we couldn’t see how it would fit in the McLaren model range, so close was it in power and specification to the 12C’s replacement – the McLaren 650S – to maker commercial sense. But all has been revealed.

The McLaren 625C (McLaren say the ‘C’ is for Club. Really?) is actually a softer version of the 650S with a little less power and a little more comfort, aimed initially at buyers in Hong Kong but likely to spread to other Asian markets too.

The 625C looks just like the 650S, but gets the same state of tune as the old 12C – 616bhp – which is still enough to get to 62mph in 3.1 seconds and on to 207mph.

It also gets a more compliant setup in its ‘Normal’ setting so wealthy Asian buyers are more cosseted (which is quite a trick as the 650S is already the most comfy supercar on sale), but they can still go and play with Sport and Track settings the same as the 650S.

Available as either a Coupe or Spider, the only downside for the 625C – apart from a bit less power – seems to be the loss of carbon ceramic brakes.
