There’s nothing quite like a bit of track success to boost car sales. From the prosaic to the extraordinary, car makers love the lift a bit of (successful) track time brings.

Hence we have the McLaren MP4-12C GT3, the track version of the new McLaren MP4-12C.

This is a well trod route for McLaren, with the mighty McLaren F1 taking Le Mans by the scruff of the neck in the ’90s and making the race it’s own. That success even spawned a limited edition of the limited edition F1 in the shape of the McLaren F1 LM.

The MP4-12C GT3 gets the same 3.8 litre V8 as the road car, but with some distinctly tack-focused tweaking to the engine and suspension. The gearbox gets changed for a Ricardo unit, the brakes get some extra meat and there are aero tweaks with a fixed rear wing, front splitter and rear diffuser.

And now all these changes have been wrought it’s time to move from simulator to track, so McLaren booked a bit of Silverstone time, shoved Alvaro Parente behind the wheel and went out to play.

Fortunately, they took their video cameras with them.
