Mercedes AMG Performance 50 – 8 new AMG models promised

Sat, 16 Jun 2012

Mercedes are celebrating 45 years of AMG and looking forward to the next 5 years with AMG Performance 50 & 8 new models.

Mercedes has been busy celebrating 45 years of the AMG Performance brand, with cars like the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary rolled out to commemorate the AMG brand.

Looking back is all very well, but it’s the future that matters. So Mercedes are teasing 8 new AMG models over the next 5 years in a future strategy they’re dubbing ‘AMG Performance 50′.

The first of the new AMG models will be the Mercedes A45 AMG, the first compact Mercedes to get a proper AMG makeover. It will get stellar performance from what looks set to be the most powerful engine per litre in production with around 350bhp from its 2.0 litre turbo when it hits showrooms in 2013.

The AMG45 will also be 4WD, something AMG promise is very much the future of AMG road cars and not just on SUVs. The 4WD platform for the new A Class will doubtless underpin AMG versions of the Mercedes CLA and CLC and of course the new B Class SUV – the Mercedes GLA.

That covers about half of the AMG models planned by Mercedes over the next five years, but what of the others?

Well, it’s pretty certain we’ll se a baby SLS – the Mercedes SLC AMG – before too long, and no doubt an AMG version of the new CLS Shooting Brake. What we wouldn’t bet against either is new diesel powered AMG cars.

Any other thoughts?
