Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition confirmed for LA and Tokyo

Fri, 15 Nov 2013

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed its SLS AMG supercar will bow out at the 2013 LA and Tokyo Motor Shows with a limited-numbers GT Final Edition.

The 350 examples of the SLS AMG GT Final Edition available are said to represent the ‘last opportunity’ for interested buyers to purchase an SLS before it gets pensioned off – perhaps in favour of a newer, smaller AMG-built sports car.

Like the numbers, details about the SLS Final Edition are also limited at this stage, with this initial teaser release confirming little more than its motor show debuts. Expect more next week.

However, we can tell you that the Final Edition will be available as both a Coupe and a Roadster, and the black bonnet you see in the pictures is the carbonfibre item from the ferocious SLS AMG Black Series.

The Black Series also donates the carbonfibre rear spoiler, while the black alloy wheels are inspired by the C63 AMG Edition 507.

Possibly, it’s a bit much. But equally, we’d have all been complaining if the only changes here were a plaque on the dashboard, and we’re sure aspiring owners will either be delighted or prepared to dive into the options list.

0-62mph in 3.7 seconds, top speed of 214mph

As its full name suggests, the SLS AMG GT Final Edition is powered by the same 591hp 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine as the existing SLS AMG GT, which sits just behind the front wheels and tests the rear tyres’ traction via a seven-speed dual-cltuch paddleshift transmission.

As such, performance should be basically identical – which means 0-62mph in as little as 3.7 seconds and a top speed in the region of 214mph (though perhaps not in the Roadster with the roof down). Expect the same AMG Ride Control Performance suspension set up as well, though perhaps with a few tweaks.

Being in teaser status at this stage, there is no pricing information. But fair to say the Final Edition will cost a chunk more than the standard SLS AMG GT, which starts at just over £165,000.

We’ll bring you more from the 2013 Tokyo and Los Angeles Motor Shows next week, where the SLS AMG GT Final Edition debuts alongside the new Mercedes S65 AMG limo.
