Mercedes E Class gets AMG Pack

Thu, 22 Jan 2009

Mercedes quietly unveiled the 2009 Mercedes Benz E Class at Detroit. Quietly, because it wasn’t actually planned, but due to details leaking out ahead of the show, it seems Mercedes decided they may as well get the reveal over.

Bigger than the last generation E Class, the new E Class gets a complete styling overhaul, with a new style in keeping with Mercedes more recent ‘Family’ looks. The interior is more angular, and is starting to have the feel of the old bomb-proof build quality Mercedes was long known for.

Lots of electronic goodies turn up, such as Attention Assist, that monitors steering angles to check if the driver is getting sleepy, auto-dimming headlights, infra-red night vision (which actually works really well), lane assist and blind-spot monitoring.

The E Class actually goes on sale in the Summer, and will be fully revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, but Mercedes has now announced the AMG kit for the E Class.

For those more concerned about how the E Class looks and handles, AMG packs have been announced for the E Class range, with prices from €2915 and €4046, dependent on engine and spec level.

The AMG pack gives front and rear aprons, side skirts and larger cooling vents. Stainless steel tail pipes (single on 4-cylinder and double on 6/8 cylinder), AMG alloys, perforated disc brakes and Direct Control Suspension (with a 15mm lowering) complete the exterior changes.

Inside you get micro-fibre and fake leather seats, new steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and paddles shifters for the auto ‘box. The usual AMG logos on mats and others crop up. Feels more austere, but good quality.

The AMG pack does make the new E Class look, and feel, more agressive. A relatively cheap way to get an E63 look-alike.
