Mercedes & Mauro Calo set new world drifting record (video)

Mercedes C63 - tyres alight

We put you on notice last week that a Mercedes C63 AMG – being driven by Mauro Calo – was going to attempt a new world drifting record at MB World. Well, as we suspected, they had little trouble claiming the record.

Mauro Calo is very familiar with Mercedes and with the track at MB World. He’s a stunt and demonstration driver who’s worked for plenty of Motoring outlets and founded the Mercedes Silver Arrows Display Team.

All of which made the new record pretty much a foregone conclusion, but Mauro still had to deliver. Which of course he did, smashing the old world record by taking the C63 a total of 2308 metres with the Mercedes’ tail hanging out and the tyres alight.

Mauro used a roughly circular part of the handling circuit at MB World for the record as it provided a complete 360 degree circle of tarmac – ideal for a drifting record.

Andrew Mallory, Mercedes Commercial Director, said:

“When Mauro approached us to hold his record breaking attempt on the circuit at Mercedes-Benz World we were happy to offer him the support.  He has been a valuable member of the driving experience team for several years and is a respected driver in the industry, so there was no doubt he would achieve his aim”.

Fortunately there were a few camcorders on duty, so we’ve grabbed a video of the record. It gets a bit boring after the first few laps, but you can almost smell the rubber.

Well done, Mauro and Mercedes.
