New Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited launches

Thu, 18 Oct 2012

Jeep has revealed a limited edition Grand Cherokee with the looks of the SRT8 but without the price or outright power – the new Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited.

Reports of the death of the SUV have been greatly exaggerated in recent years, and the whole SUV sector – from compact to full size – still holds a lot of appeal for buyers.

And when it comes to full size SUVs few do it any better than Jeep – certainly as far as off-road experience goes – even if previous versions of their full size Grand Cherokee have been a bit below European standards in terms of materials and on-road ability.

That’s changed to a big degree with the latest Grand Cherokee that manages to offer an interesting mix of traditional US SUV goodness with a credible effort at offering European levels of equipment, trim and dynamics.

Top of the Jeep Grand Cherokee tree is the Grand Cherokee SRT8, a Porsche Cayenne competitor with a more aggressive look and a thumping great 6.4 litre V8. It’s an impressive SUV offering a lot of performance for a relatively modest price, but a 6.4 litre V8 is not the first choice for most buyers.

So Jeep has sensibly rolled out a new Grand Cherokee – the Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited – which gets a chunk of the SRT’s aggressive demeanour but with a more frugal heart – the 237bhp 3.0 litre diesel V6.

As well as the sporty tweaks to the Grand Cherokee, Jeep has added carbon fibre trim inside, sports seats with Nappa leather, racing style pedals, Quadra-Lift air suspension, adaptive cruise, 20″ gloss black alloys, power tailgate and an 825-watt Harman-Kardon sound system.

All that adds up to a Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited that costs £44,595, looks pretty much like an SRT8 but does twice as many miles to the gallon.
