New MG5 - but don't expect to see it until late 2013

The MG5 has been revealed – a Golf size hatch – and will launch in China this year. The UK and Europe will have to wait until late 2013.

The first photos of the new MG 5 fluttered in to our inbox today, and it’s really the first time we’ve reported anything on the next MG from China since this time last year when we had early sketches of the MG5.

The actual MG5 – which we think will arrive officially at the Beijing Motor Show next month – is quite a way away from that original sketch (aren’t they always?) but actually looks better than it did as a sketch, which is unusual.

With the MG5 not due to hit the UK and Europe for probably another 18 months (although we expect it to go on sale in China by the end of 2012) the new MG5 looks convincing; a proper-looking Golf/Focus competitor.

We’re assuming the design of the MG5 was completed by ex-MG Rover designer Tony Williams-Kenny because it looks a European design, either that or Tony has taught his Chinese protégés well.

All we really know for now is that the MG5 looks set to get a 1.5 litre petrol for China with around 100bhp, with a four speed auto or five speed manual box, and there is talk of a 1.8 litre turbo too. Not that either of the engines – or the gearboxes – will reach Europe.

For the UK and Europe expect to see a choice of 4-pot petrols in the MG5 hatch, and maybe even a turbo diesel. You can also expect suspension and trim differences, although with the likely launch in the UK of the MG5 at least 18 months away we doubt MG themselves know yet.

But the MG5 looks convincing enough to be in with a chance when it does hit Europe.
